How to avoid estrogen mimicking chemicals

June 25, 2012
by Dr. Veronique Desaulniers

For decades, there has been serious concern about the environmental implications of hormone disrupting chemicals called “xeno-estrogens” or false estrogens. Literally translated, Xeno-estrogens are “foreign estrogens” that imitate estrogen and its effect on the body. These chemical estrogens are potent and powerful and have been found in extremely high levels in Breast Cancer tumors.

I. What types of products contain “foreign estrogens”?

§  Weed killers
§  Sunscreen lotions that contain 4-MBC
§  Food preservatives such as BHA
§  Canned foods and plastics (BPA and BPA-S)
§  Insecticides and pesticides
§  Food Dyes
§  Food chemicals that are used to protect fats and oils from becoming rancid
§  Anti-perspirants that are made with Metalloestrogens or toxic metals
§  Make ups and skin care products that have the preservative called paraben
§  Tap water (most city waters are contaminated with estrogens from oral contraceptive pills)
§  Detergents and surfactants
§  Growth hormones in dairy and meat products

II. What are the health implications of “foreign estrogens”?

Since estrogen is intricately involved with so many hormonal pathways, the concern about these foreign estrogens is that are interfering with reproduction, increasing endometriosis, increasing fibroids in the uterus and breasts, affecting sperm production and increasing the possibility of developing Breast Cancer.

A study recently posted in an article in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, revealed high concentrations of parabens in post-mastectomy breasts affected with Breast Cancer. The parabens were present, even with women who had never used any type of underarm deodorant throughout their whole lifetime, indicating that the parabens were acquired through the environment. The level of parabens in the breast tissue was 1 million times higher than the normal estrogen levels in breast tissue.

III. How can you protect yourself from “Xeno-estrogens”?

The simple answer is to become aware of what you put in your body, on your body and the products you use in your home and in your environment. Don’t get overwhelmed by the process but simply start with 1 item at a time. You will feel empowered that you are being proactive about your health – which will encourage you to take the next step.

IV. Here is a simple checklist for you to follow:

1. Begin with your lotions and skin care products. There are many organic and parabens free products that are available on line or at a natural market.
2. Stop using toxic sunscreens.
3. Store your food in glass containers.
4. Stop microwaving your food, and especially NOT in plastic containers.
5. Avoid regular dairy products and replace with hormone free dairy or almond milk.
6. Eat only organic meats that are hormone and antibiotic free.
7. Try to eat only organic fruits and vegetables.
8. Read your food labels. Never eat food that has food preservatives in it. (BHA and BHT)
9. Replace the pesticides and insecticides with bio-degradable natural products.
10. Drink purified, filtered or clean spring water.

Men, women and children are being affected by Xeno-estrogens. The American Cancer Society estimates that over 2100 men and over 290,000 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2012. Creating awareness about this environmental issue may very well help save many lives.

Hidden hormones can bring about early puberty in kids

By Dr. Jennifer Landa

Children grow up fast – every parent knows that. But in modern America the speed of growth isn’t just about the years flying by too quickly. What if you discovered that your 6-year-old was already developing pubic hair? Or your 8-year-old daughter was already developing breast buds? It can be a very scary experience as a parent. There is a lot for parents (and patients, as they come of age) to understand about precocious puberty.

About precocious puberty
Recent studies have shown that puberty is occurring in children at a very early age. Young girls as young as 8 years old may experience normal breast development and pubic hair. As of 2010, two times as many girls were experiencing early puberty compared to a decade ago. However, in some cases, children as young as 6 and 7 years old – or younger – may experience these symptoms, a condition known as precocious puberty.

What’s causing the problem?
Scientists have linked the trends in early puberty to several different factors.  Society has begun moving at a faster and faster pace - convenience foods and ready-made products have become a regular part of everyday life. These conveniences, however, are one of the most obvious links to early puberty.

The FDA currently allows six hormones in the food supply, including estradiol, estriol, testosterone and progesterone – the sex hormones that can accelerate the age at which puberty occurs.  The obesity epidemic plays a role as well. Estrogens are made and stored in fat tissue – increasing exposure in overweight and obese children.

And, of course, toxins found in everyday products can be a culprit as well. Household products like hand soap, shampoos, cosmetics and cleaning products contain chemicals - namely parabens - that are known as xeno estrogens and can mimic estrogen in the body, increasing the likelihood of early puberty.

What are the treatment options?
In most cases of precocious puberty, a monthly injection of a medication, such as leuprolide, is a sufficient treatment. This drug delays development until the child reaches the normal age of puberty. Upon discontinuation of the medication, the process of puberty will resume as normal.
In rare cases, the early onset of puberty may be linked to a tumor on the adrenal glands. This tumor may be surgically removed and stop the progression of puberty.

What can you do right now?
You can slow or eliminate the impact that early exposure to excess hormones has on your kids by changing a few every day habits. Not only will you improve their health at this young age, but you will teach them how to live a healthy lifestyle throughout their lifespan and reduce the increased risk of disease that accompanies early onset puberty.

1. Go green. Choosing organic foods or, even better, shopping at the local farmers market will cut down on the chemical exposure and processing of your food. Cut down on the chemicals in your home by cleaning with natural substances, like vinegar and lemon juice. These are equally effective and non-toxic.
2. Read product labels. Spend time reading labels when choosing foods, household cleaners, shampoos, soaps and cosmetics. Avoid products with a lengthy chemical list and be on the lookout for the most common culprits of bodily harm, like parabens, ingredients ending in “-eth,” sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate, triclosan and triethanolamine (TEA).
3. Exercise. Get your child involved in an active lifestyle. Take walks together as a family, encourage participation in recreational sports, take your kids to jump rope or play tag at the park. Physical activity can help your child with weight management and further reduce exposure to hormones.

20 Dumb Ways You Settle For Less

BY SHANNON KAISER
APRIL 6, 2013
We all have habits and daily routines, but some of those habits can unconsciously keep us from reaching our goals.
As spring kicks in, I've started a personal fear cleanse and completely overhauled my life, starting with removing thought patterns, people and habits that no longer serve me. The results have been tremendous. I've lost weight, gained self-confidence and self-love. My career is flourishing, and I'm more present and peaceful in every area of my life.
If you want to be happy and healthy, consider giving up these 20 things:
1. Settling for something because you think it's the best you can get.
2. Changing yourself to get someone to like you.
3. Believing that your personal worth is tied to the number on the scale.
4. Trusting your head over your heart.
5. Worrying about your future.
6. Giving up on your dreams.
7. Believing other people’s opinions of you matter.
8. Clinging to expectations.
9. Judging and comparing yourself to others.
10. Avoiding your true feelings.
11. Letting your fear hold you back.
12. Talking badly about yourself to yourself and others.
13. Poor health habits and an unhealthy body.
14. Focusing on what you don't want.
15. Gossiping. Blaming. Manipulating.
16. Working too hard.
17. Staying in any situation that doesn't serve you.
18. Eating sugar.
19. Holding on to resentments.
20. Looking outside of yourself to find your happiness.
