6 Food Remedies for Greasy Hair

#2: Barley
Barley is one of the best grains you can eat if your hair gets oily easily as it has the lowest Glycemic Index (GI) rating of all common grains. Carbs that have a high Glycemic Index (GI) rating are quickly broken down by the body and cause a rapid, large rise in blood glucose levels, which in turn generally triggers the pancreas to release large amounts of insulin. In contrast, low-GI carbs, which take much longer to digest, cause only a small, slow rise in the blood glucose and insulin levels. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy, but excess insulin in the bloodstream can lead to a sharp increase in circulating androgen, which in turn can increase sebum on the skin surface. Whole grain (hulled) barley, the most nutrient-rich type, is still relatively difficult to find in regular supermarkets, but you can often find it in health food stores.

#3: Oatmeal
Eating a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast is a superb way to start a day off right. Oats are packed with B vitamins and zinc, the key micronutrients for preventing oily hair. Before eating oats, soak them for several hours — this allows enzymes to break down and neutralize phytic acid. Phytic acid, present in untreated oats and other grains, can block the absorption of important nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, copper, zinc, and iron.

#4: Crimini Mushrooms
Great news for mushroom aficionados: Crimini (also spelled cremini) mushrooms are a great low-calorie source of B vitamins and a particularly good source of vitamin B2 which is known to combat greasy hair by regulating sebum production. In addition, these delicious mushrooms with a delightful earthy flavor contain a substantial amount of zinc. Crimini mushrooms can be served raw or cooked. When serving them raw, you may want to sprinkle them with a little lemon juice to prevent them from turning dark brown.

#5: Almonds
Whole almonds can be eaten as a snack, and ground almonds can be used in baking to create a rich, moist texture in cakes and biscuits. But the use of almonds is not limited to purely culinary pursuits: almonds offer many health benefits as well, and one of their greatest qualities is their potential to help prevent greasy hair. Almonds are a concentrated source of vitamin B2, with half a cup of whole almonds providing more than 40 percent of the daily reference intake for this sebum regulating vitamin. Almonds also contain a fair amount of vitamin B6. In addition, almonds are a great source of essential fatty acids (EFAs), healthful fats that the body cannot synthesize and that must be obtained through diet.

#6: Paprika Powder
The slew of vitamins and minerals in paprika powder is so comprehensive that a few spoonfuls a day will provide you with more hair health promoting nutrients than many vitamin pills. Paprika is packed with beta-carotene and vitamin E. It is also one of most vitamin C rich spices. Further, it is one of the most concentrated sources of B vitamins, particularly of vitamin B2 and vitamin B6 (a mere tablespoon of paprika powder provides 14% of the recommended daily intake for vitamin B6). Evidence suggests that a sufficient intake of the vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) can help combat greasy hair by regulating sebum production. Furthermore, vitamin B6 helps control sugar cravings (diets high in sugary foods can make hair more oily) and promotes proper absorption of zinc in the intestines.

Sari Kedelai dan Susu Sapi, Mana yang Lebih Menyehatkan Tubuh?

Jakarta, Susu murni atau susu sapi kerap dijadikan asupan pelengkap nutrisi sehari-hari. Namun sari kedelai atau yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan susu kacang pun tak kalah populernya. Sama-sama banyak disukai berbagai kalangan, mana yang lebih sehat?

Menurut ahli gizi Jansen Ongko, MSc, RD, sari kedelai sebenarnya bukan susu. Minuman ini memiliki tekstur dan warna yang mirip dengan susu sapi saja sehingga kerap disebut 'susu'. Padahal dari segi kandungan cukup berbeda.

"Kandungannya lain, hanya karbohidrat saja. Kalau susu sapi ada lemaknya, ada proteinnya, sementara soy milk itu dominan di karbohidrat. Jika dilihat dari kandungan gizinya, sama sehatnya. Tinggal dikombinasikan dengan nutrisi lainnya," papar Jansen.

Dikutip dari ABC Australia, Selasa (17/3/2015), ahli gizi Curtin University, Australia, Denise Griffiths mengungkapkan bahwa meskipun kedelai kerap dianggap lebih sehat, namun tidak otomatis menjadikan bahan ini sebagai pilihan yang lebih baik daripada susu dalam setiap kasus.

"Jika Anda terbiasa mengonsumsi susu penuh lemak atau full-fat, maka kedelai bisa menjadi alternatif yang lebih baik. Tapi jika produk olahan susu yang Anda konsumsi cukup baik, misalnya low-fat atau rendah lemak, maka tidak perlu diganti dengan sari kedelai," terang Griffiths.

Alasan seseorang dianjurkan untuk minum susu sapi adalah karena produk tersebut merupakan salah satu makanan yang paling lengkap nutrisinya. Kalsium dalam susu sapi mudah diserap oleh tubuh, terutama jika dibandingkan dengan asupan kaya kalsium lain seperti brokoli.

Sementara itu, sari kedelai merupakan sumber yang baik dari zat besi, serat (yang tidak bisa Anda dapatkan dalam susu) dan vitamin lainnya. Olahan kedelai ini juga mengandung antioksidan yang dikenal sebagai isoflavon atau fitoestrogen. Fitoestrogen adalah senyawa yang ditemukan dalam makanan nabati seperti kacang-kacangan, biji rami dan makanan berbasis kedelai.

Beberapa penelitian menunjukkan bahwa konsumsi makanan yang mengandung fitoestrogen bermanfaat bagi kesehatan, salah satunya mengurangi risiko kanker hormonal tertentu (payudara dan prostat). Dan yang pasti, sari kedelai mengandung lebih rendah lemak jenuh dibandingkan susu sapi. Oleh sebab itu, Griffiths menyarankan Anda untuk mengonsumsi keduanya secara bergantian untuk mendapatkan masing-masing manfaatnya.

Hormone replacement therapy linked to increased risk of ovarian cancer, study finds


An analysis of over 50 studies suggests an association between short-term use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause and a 40 percent increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.

The study, published Thursday in the journal The Lancet, reviewed data from 21,488 women who lived in North America, Europe and Australia. Researchers observed that women who used HRT for only a few years were more likely to develop the two most common types of ovarian cancer, compared to women who had never taken HRT. Those types are serous epithelial and endometrioid ovarian cancer. HRT use was not linked to an increased risk of the other two main types of ovarian cancer: mucinous and clear cell ovarian cancers.

HRT for menopause is meant to replace hormones that the body no longer makes after menopause. Doctors used to prescribe it as a standard treatment to relieve hot flashes and other menopause symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic. A large clinical study later suggested one type of the treatment— the estrogen-progestin pill Prerempo— posed more risks than benefits, and doctors started to become less inclined to prescribe it as a result. Those risks included heart disease, stroke, blood clots and  breast cancer.

However, that decrease in use has now leveled off, according to a news release for the current study. About 6 million women in the United Kingdom and the United States use HRT today to relieve menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal symptoms like dryness, itchiness, burning and discomfort during sexual intercourse.

The new research analyzed use of the two most common types of HRT used during menopause: those containing only estrogen or those containing a combination of estrogen and progestagen.

Study author Sir Richard Peto, a medical statistics and epidemiology professor at the University of Oxford, said in the news release that his team’s research suggests that, among women who take HRT for five years starting at about age 50, there will be about one extra ovarian cancer diagnosis for every 1,000 users and one extra death from ovarian cancer for every 1,700 users. 

For the meta-analysis, over 100 scientists worldwide analyzed individual participant data from 52 studies— a body of research that they say encompassed all of the epidemiological evidence ever gathered on HRT use and ovarian cancer.

Study authors saw an increased risk of ovarian cancer among current users as well as those who had used the treatment within the past five years, but that risk declined over time after stopping treatment. But, among women who had used HRT for at least five years, that risk remained 10 years later.

"The definite risk of ovarian cancer even with less than five years of HRT is directly relevant to today's patterns of use— with most women now taking HRT for only a few years— and has implications for current efforts to revise U.K. and worldwide guidelines,” study author Dame Valerie Beral, epidemiology professor at the University of Oxford, said in the news release.

Researchers noted the increased risk was not altered by the age at which HRT began, body size, past use of oral contraceptives— which are thought to protect against ovarian cancer— hysterectomy, alcohol use, tobacco use, or family history of breast and ovarian cancer.

Current HRT guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as those in the U.S. and Europe don’t mention ovarian cancer as a risk, the news release noted. The U.K. guidelines associate a risk with long-term use.

Oleocanthal akan bekerja dengan cara memecah inti sel yang disebut dengan lisosom dan kemudian oleocanthal akan mengeluarkan protein yang dapat mematikan sel.

Hal tersebut diketahui ketika para ilmuwan menyuntikkan minyak zaitun ke dalam sel kanker dan sel kanker bisa mati dalam waktu 30 menit sampai 1 jam.

"Lisosom merupakan pusat daur ulang sel. Ketika Anda membukanya dan memasukkan minyak zaitun, maka Anda akan menghancurkan pertahanan sel tersebut," terang peneliti dari Paul Breslin, dari Rutgers University di Amerika Serikat. "Hebatnya lagi, oleocanthal tidak membahayakan sel-sel sehat Anda sehingga kesehatan anggota tubuh lainnya tidak terganggu."

Peneliti pun menyarankan agar Anda yang merupakan penderita sel kanker segera mengganti konsumsi minyak biasa Anda dengan minyak zaitun. Memang minyak zaitun jarang digunakan untuk menggoreng, namun hal ini pun bisa mencegah Anda dari konsumsi gorengan yang bisa semakin memperparah penyakit kanker. Sebaliknya, Anda harus memperbanyak konsumsi salad yang dicampur dengan minyak zaitun demi kesehatan tubuh Anda.

Enam Kacang Terbaik untuk Tubuh

Sebagai cemilan kacang adalah makanan paling praktis untuk didapatkan. Namun ternyata lebih banyak manfaat  kesehatan yang bisa kita dapatkan dari segenggam kacang, lebih dari sekadar kenikmatan mengunyah makanan yang biasanya berbentuk kecil-kecil dan terasa renyah itu.

Secara alami seperti dikutip laman Health kacang umumnya sudah mengandung lemak, protein, vitamin dan mineral. Namun hati-hati karena kadar lemak dan kalorinya cukup tinggi segenggam pertama mungkin memang cukup sehat untuk tubuh Anda. Sementara genggam kedua bisa jadi membahayakan diet Anda.

Berikut enam kacang yang terbukti bermanfaat untuk kesehatan.

1. Kacang terbaik untuk diet: almond, mede dan pistachio.
Tiga jenis kacang ini punya kadar kalori yang moderat untuk dimasukkan ke diet harian.  “Kacang ini masing-masing mengandung asam lemak omega-3, protein, dan serat. Semua ini membantu Anda untuk tetap merasa penuh dan menekan selera makan,” kata Judy Chaplan, RD, juru bicara  Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Almond (23 butir) mengandung 6 gram protein dan 14 gram lemak,  kacang mede (16-18 butir) mengandung: 5 gram protein, 13 gram lemak dan pistachio (49 butir) mengandung: 6 gram protein dan 13 gram lemak.

Hindari kacang dalam kemasan atau yang dibakar tapi dengan minyak. Sebaiknya makan tiga jenis kacang ini dalam kondisi mentah atau dipanggang.  Kacang yang dibakar  seringkali ditambahi minyak omega-6 yang tidak sehat. Sementara temperatur yang tinggi akan merusakkan nutrisi dalam kacang.

2. Kacang terburuk untuk diet : macadamia dan pecan
Satu ons kacang macadamia (10-12 butir) mengandung : 2 gram protein dan 21 gram lemak. Sementara pecan (18-20 butir) mengandung 2 gram protein dan 21 gram lemak dan pecan (18-20 bagian) mengandung 3 gram protein dan 20 gram lemak, keduanya mengandung masing-masing 200 kalori, dengan sangat sedikit protein dan tinggi lemak.  

Namun jangan khawatir, ini tetap kacang yang baik jika  Anda membatasi porsinya.

3. Kacang terbaik untuk jantung: kacang kenari.
Sementara semua kacang berisi lemak omega-3 yang sehat untuk jantung, walnut atau kacang kenari (14 bagian) mengandung:  185 kalori, 18 gram lemak dan 4 gram  protein sekaligus kaya akan asam linoleic alfa (ALA). Penelitian membuktikan ALA bisa membantu kondisi jantung dengan irama yang tak menentu.

Penelitian di Spanyol pada tahun 2006 menyimpulkan kacang kenari juga sama efektifnya dengan minyak zaitun untuk meredakan peradangan dan oksidasi  di arteri setelah mengkonsumsi makanan berlemak.

4. Kacang terbaik untuk otak : kacang tanah.
Kacang tanah kaya akan folat — mineral yang penting untuk perkembangan otak dan menjaganya dari penurunan kognitif. Kacang tanah juga jadi sumber folat yang baik untuk para vegetarian untuk memenuhi kebutuhannya saat hamil untuk mencegah janin mengalami cacat bawaan lahir.

Seperti sebagian besar kacang, kacang tanah juga banyak mengandung lemak yang sehat untuk otak dan vitamin E. Satu ons kacang tanah  (sekitar 28 butir dengan kulitnya) mengandung 170 kalori, 7 gram protein dan 14 gram lemak.

5. Kacang terbaik untuk kaum pria: kacang Brazil dan pecan.
Kacang Brazil yang ‘creamy’ kaya akan selenium, mineral yang terbukti ampuh untuk mencegah kanker prostat selain penyakit lainnya. Satu kacang saja cukup untuk memenuhi kebutuhan selenium seharian. Karenanya berhati-hatilah mengkonsumsinya karena terlalu banyak selenium bisa juga memicu diabetes tipe 2. Satu ons kacang Brazil (6 kacang) mengandung 190 kalori, 90 gram lemak, dan 4 gram protein.

Pecan juga baik untuk kesehatan pria karena kaya akan beta-sitosterol, steroid dari tanaman yang bisa meringankan gejala benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) atau pembesaran prostat. Satu ons pecan (18-20 bagian) mengandung 200 kalori, 21 gram lemak dan 3 gram protein.

6. Kacang terbaik untuk mencegah penyakit: almond.
Selain baik untuk diet, almond yang rendah kalori jug a mengandung lebih banyak kalsium dibanding kacang lain. Karenanya secara umum kacang ini sangat baik untuk kesehatan

Belum lagi almond sangat kata akan serat, vitamin E, dan antioksidan yang membantu memerangi peradangan dan sejumlah masalah kesehatan lain seperti kanker paru dan penurunan kemampuan otak akibat penuaan.

That said, clogged heart arteries are still the number-one cause of death in the United States. The following is a list of symptoms that might be worth a chat with your doctor. But they may also be caused by a bunch of other things, so don't freak out. Only your real doctor—not Dr. Google—can really tell you if these symptoms mean anything at all.

You're extremely tried
This isn't just lack of sleep tired; it is extreme fatigue. Think of how you feel when you get the flu, except this doesn't go away.

"A lot of women kind of blow this off assuming it's nothing and that they will feel better, but in reality it could be a sign of your heart," said Suzanne Steinbaum, DO, Director of Women's Heart Health at the Heart and Vascular Institute at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

The reason why you feel that way: It comes down to a lack of oxygen. "The heart is struggling and straining to deliver the oxygen to your body." That said, plenty of people feel tired for lots of reasons. If this is your only symptom, you can talk to your doctor, but don't conclude you have heart trouble based on this alone.

Your feet swell
Feet swelling can occur for a bunch of garden-variety reasons, such as pregnancy, varicose veins (which are unsightly but not dangerous), or when you travel and have limited ability to move around. It can also be a sign of heart failure, a chronic condition in which the heart pumps blood inefficiently.

"Swelling can also occur when the heart valve doesn't close normally," said Dr. Michael Miller, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Some medications for blood pressure and diabetes could also cause swelling, Miller said.
"Heart-related foot swelling is usually accompanied by other symptoms that include shortness of breath and/or fatigue," he said.

If you recently developed foot swelling, see your doctor to determine the cause and how best to treat it.

You have extreme pain when you walk
If your hip and leg muscles cramp when you climb, walk, or move, then feel better when you rest, don't shrug it off as due to old age or a lack of exercise (though those things certainly could be the culprits). It could be a sign of peripheral arterial disease, also known as PAD. PAD is a buildup of fatty plaque in leg arteries that is linked to a higher risk of heart disease. If you have PAD there's a 50 percent chance you also have a blockage in one of the heart arteries, Miller said. The good news? PAD (and heart disease for that matter) is a very treatable condition.


You get dizzy or light-headed
Again, this is one of those symptoms that can have many non-heart related causes. If you have ever been to a gym, you may have seen warning signs to stop walking, running, cycling or elliptical stepping if you feel dizzy or light-headed. This symptom could be caused by dehydration or because you "got up too quick," but if it occurs on a regular basis then talk to your doctor to see if medication side effects, inner ear problems, anemia, or, less commonly, heart issues are to blame. This spinning state could be caused by blockages in arteries that lessen blood pressure or by faulty valves that cannot maintain blood pressure, Miller said.

You get short of breath, even though you're fit
Despite your thrice-weekly cycling classes, you get winded walking up a flight of stairs or you're coughing a lot. What gives? It could be asthma, anemia, an infection, or rarely a problem with the heart's valves or its ability to pump blood.

"Fluid buildup affecting the left side of the heart can produce wheezing that simulates bronchial asthma," Miller said. "Once the valve is fixed, fluid no longer builds up in the lungs and the patient breathes easier."

Since exercise can strengthen the heart, get this symptom checked out so it doesn't interfere with your ability to get a good workout.

You're depressed
Depression is one of the most common problems in the world, and it affects 19 million Americans each year. Depression is probably not a sign that you have heart trouble (as if you need something else to worry about.) But mental wellbeing is linked to physical wellbeing; many studies suggest that people who are depressed are at greater risk of heart trouble.

"People who have multiple risk factors for heart disease or who do have heart disease have a tendency to be depressed," Steinbaum said.

Either way you look at it, it's another reason to seek help if you are depressed.

You get migraines
Sometimes a headache is just a headache. But in some cases, regular migraines suggest that something is amiss with your ticker. Migraines occur in 12 percent of the general population, but that stat rises to around 40 percent in patients with cardiovascular disease. And while there isn't a clear-cut connection, the occurrence of migraines with auras has been related to some heart abnormalities, so it is possible that these attacks might have a connection to dysfunction of the heart. One theory is that they could both are the result of autonomic nervous system imbalances.

You can hear your heart beat when you fall asleep at night
"Some patients with a loud faulty valve can even hear the sound of their valve at night when they are trying to fall asleep," Miller said.

And while some patients adjust to the sound and often just change their sleeping position so as not to hear it, doesn't mean you should ignore it. If you're being lulled to sleep by the thump-thump of your heart, tell your doctor so he or she can find out why. A pounding heartbeat can also be a sign of low blood pressure, low blood sugar, anemia, medication, dehydration, and other causes.

Anxiety, sweating, and nausea attack you all at once
You're suddenly anxious, sweating, and nauseous. These are classic symptoms of a panic attack, but they are also heart attack symptoms. If these early heart symptoms are followed up with shortness of breath (though you haven't moved a muscle), extreme fatigue, or accompanied by pain, fullness, or aching in the your chest that may (or may not) radiate to the back, shoulders, arm, neck, or throat, then get to an emergency room immediately. Waiting more than five minutes to take action could change your chances of survival. In fact, those who arrive at the hospital within an hour of heart attack symptoms starting have better survival rate than those who wait.
