Melindungi Kulit Bayi Dari SLS

5 Kebiasaan Untuk Memperlambat Kebotakan

How to Avoid Potassium Deficiency

Written by Elea Carey
Medically Reviewed by Peggy Pletcher, MS, RD, LD, CDE

Potassium is a type of mineral called an electrolyte. Other electrolytes include sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Electrolytes carry an electric charge, and control the electrical activity of your body, including the heart. They also affect your hydration and muscle function.

Potassium is critical to your body’s functions, and without it you can have serious health problems. Your body needs potassium to break down and use carbohydrates and proteins. It’s also used to help build muscles.

A healthy adult needs 4.7 grams of potassium a day.
Low potassium is called hypokalemia. The symptoms include severe muscle fatigue, feeling weak, and muscle cramps. If you’re on a diuretic medication that causes your body to lose too much potassium and you have any of theses symptoms, you should call your doctor immediately. Potassium affects the function of all your muscles, most importantly your heart muscles. That means low potassium can lead to heart arrhythmia or attack, especially in those who already have heart problems.

What Causes Low Potassium?
Some chronic conditions can cause low potassium levels. So can vomiting and diarrhea, along with long-term kidney disease, alcoholism, and eating disorders like bulimia, which involve forced vomiting and excessive use of laxatives.

Because of this, over-the-counter fluids recommended for people with vomiting and diarrhea usually contain potassium, as do many sports drinks, which are also sometimes suggested to help with those symptoms.  As mentioned earlier, you might also experience low potassium if you take diuretics for a medical condition. In that case, your doctor may prescribe potassium-sparing diuretics to prevent potassium loss.

If you have to go to an emergency room because of low potassium, you could be given fluids containing electrolytes or intravenous potassium. Non-emergencies can be treated with supplements, but talk to your doctor before you take them. The supplements don’t interact well with some medications, and your problems could be solved by a simple change to your eating habits.

Eat Your Way to Better Potassium Levels
Luckily, potassium is found in lots of foods you eat every day!

Fruits:
Bananas contain a healthy dose of potassium, and some say bananas can help you avoid muscle cramps. Up your banana intake with a banana-walnut smoothie or some delicious paleo-friendly banana bread. Oranges are another good source, as are mangoes, kiwis, apricots, dates, and avocado.

Vegetables:
Vegetables that are high in beta-carotene also tend to contain a lot of potassium, like carrots, sweet potatoes, and red peppers. What a perfect excuse to try this recipe for sweet potato and red pepper soup

Fish:
The sea is another great source of potassium. Sardines contain plenty of it, with 365 mg per can. If you need convincing about the salty critters, this flavorful recipe for Persian sardine sabzee will blow your mind. Salmon is also a great source of potassium; one fillet contains about 1.94 grams. In this recipe, the already heart-healthy fish is steamed to keep added fat low and hold in flavor. Serve with a tomato and red pepper salad for a light, colorful meal.

Meat:
Grilled steak can be a healthy part of getting enough potassium, especially when combined with tomatoes, leafy greens, and peanuts like in this Thai recipe.

The Takeaway
The bottom line is that potassium is essential for good health, and it’s pretty easy to get enough of it with a healthy diet. Sudden onset of low potassium symptoms should concern you, especially if you are on certain diuretics or have lost fluids through vomiting or diarrhea. If you experience ongoing symptoms of low potassium, see your doctor for a blood test and treatment recommendations.

6 things your looks say about your health

By Jodi Helmer

Got lackluster locks? Or a scaly patch on an elbow? Your body may be trying to tell you something.

"There are huge links between how we appear on the outside and what's happening inside," said Dr. Ramsey Markus, an associate professor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Even the most common beauty woes, like brittle nails and a dull complexion, can hint at issues beneath the surface. Give yourself a once-over for these six superficial signs you should see your doctor.

If you have: Thick, dark facial or body hair
It might mean: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

"We're not talking about a few wispy strands," said Dr. Zoe Stallings, a family physician at Duke Medicine in Durham, N.C. "This is a thick coat of 'I have sideburns that tweezers can't handle' hair."

It tends to sprout in places where men grow hair (like the cheeks, chin, chest and back) and may be due to elevated levels of male sex hormones—a common symptom of the endocrine disorder PCOS, which can increase your risk of infertility and diabetes. Ask your doc for a blood test.

Birth control pills and lifestyle changes like losing excess weight (even just a few pounds) can reduce symptoms. Your MD might also prescribe a steroid to help correct the hormone imbalance or a cream that inhibits the growth of facial hair. Another option: talking to your dermatologist about laser hair removal.

"The pro is that it's effective," Stallings said. "The con is the price."

Each session costs around $300, though some insurance plans will cover the treatment.

If you have: A brittle nail
It might mean: Fungus. It's disgusting but true—your nail bed is a perfect home for fungi.

"They like having a warm, moist layer of skin to feed off," Markus explained.

When a parasite moves in, your nail may start to split or crumble at the edges. A derm might prescribe medication. It may also help to limit exposure to moisture by wearing gloves to do the dishes or changing socks after a workout.

If the nails on both hands are brittle, you can probably blame overzealous hand washing; a supplement could do the trick. Vitamins containing keratin, in particular, improve nail strength, according to a 2014 study.

If you have: A scaly red patch
It might mean: Psoriasis.

This rash isn't just a skin problem. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder that can crop up at any age and is linked to inflammation throughout the body (experts are unsure if psoriasis causes inflammation or vice versa).

Lesions—typically on the scalp, elbows and knees—are a common symptom, but moderate to severe psoriasis is also connected to cardiovascular disease, according to a longitudinal study published last fall. Fortunately, "your risk of heart attack goes down when you treat a more severe case of psoriasis," said Dr. Jennifer Chen, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Stanford School of Medicine.

See your derm: A variety of oral and topical meds, as well as phototherapy, can reduce outbreaks.

If you have: Persistent acne
It might mean: A hormonal imbalance. Breakouts aren't just for teens and tweens.

"Acne may recur during perimenopause," Chen explained.

As estrogen and progesterone levels drop, your hormonal balance can tip toward testosterone, which triggers a surge in the production of pore-clogging oil.

"Like menopause itself, this acne varies in duration and intensity," Chen said, though the pimples often appear on the jawline. The good news, Chen said: "We have great medications to prevent acne. You just have to be proactive about it."

If you have: Dry, blotchy skin
It might mean: An omega-3 deficiency.

"As we age, our sebaceous glands produce less oil that lubricates skin," said Dr. Valori Treloar, co-author of “The Clear Skin Diet.”

Omega-3 fatty acids help keep your complexion healthy-looking in part because they protect dry skin from developing inflammation. If you have a deficiency, your skin may become itchy and blotchy, Treloar said. Eat plenty of foods rich in omega-3s, like walnuts, flaxseed and cold water fish. Still worried you're not getting enough? Consider taking a fish oil supplement.

If you have: Thinning hair
It might mean: Hypothyroidism.

When your thyroid gland is underactive, too many of your hair follicles go into resting mode. As strands naturally shed, they aren't replaced, and "women start to notice that their scalp is showing," Stallings said. Synthetic hormones and other remedies can help. Another possible culprit: low estrogen. For women in menopause, a B complex multi with collagen may restore thinning tresses, Stallings said. If you've just had a baby (another cause of an estrogen dip), don't fret: Your hair's volume should return to normal by the time your little one is six months old.

6 Food Remedies for Greasy Hair

Having problems with greasy hair that needs constant washing? Try a new approach: use functional foods as a natural remedy for greasy hair! This page of HealWithFood.org's Guide to Combatting Greasy Hair presents 7 foods that can help you maintain clean-looking hair and reduce sebum (oil) production on the scalp.

#1: Sunflower Seeds
Rich in B vitamins, sunflower seeds help regulate sebum production.
If your goal it to have lustrous locks that stay clean and fresh, be sure to include sunflower seeds in your diet. These slightly nutty-tasting seeds are an excellent natural remedy for greasy hair as they are cram-full of nutrients that contribute to healthy, fresh-looking hair. They pack vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), a stellar nutrient combo for regulating sebum production. A mere cup of sunflower seeds provides 31% of the recommended daily intake for vitamin B6. In addition to B complex vitamins, sunflower seeds are a good source of zinc, which also known to have sebum-regulating properties. When incorporating sunflower seeds into your diet, moderation should be key because these seeds, like most other seeds, are relatively high in calories and fat.

#2: Barley
Barley is one of the best grains you can eat if your hair gets oily easily as it has the lowest Glycemic Index (GI) rating of all common grains. Carbs that have a high Glycemic Index (GI) rating are quickly broken down by the body and cause a rapid, large rise in blood glucose levels, which in turn generally triggers the pancreas to release large amounts of insulin. In contrast, low-GI carbs, which take much longer to digest, cause only a small, slow rise in the blood glucose and insulin levels. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy, but excess insulin in the bloodstream can lead to a sharp increase in circulating androgen, which in turn can increase sebum on the skin surface. Whole grain (hulled) barley, the most nutrient-rich type, is still relatively difficult to find in regular supermarkets, but you can often find it in health food stores.

#3: Oatmeal
Eating a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast is a superb way to start a day off right. Oats are packed with B vitamins and zinc, the key micronutrients for preventing oily hair. Before eating oats, soak them for several hours — this allows enzymes to break down and neutralize phytic acid. Phytic acid, present in untreated oats and other grains, can block the absorption of important nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, copper, zinc, and iron.

#4: Crimini Mushrooms
Great news for mushroom aficionados: Crimini (also spelled cremini) mushrooms are a great low-calorie source of B vitamins and a particularly good source of vitamin B2 which is known to combat greasy hair by regulating sebum production. In addition, these delicious mushrooms with a delightful earthy flavor contain a substantial amount of zinc. Crimini mushrooms can be served raw or cooked. When serving them raw, you may want to sprinkle them with a little lemon juice to prevent them from turning dark brown.

#5: Almonds
Whole almonds can be eaten as a snack, and ground almonds can be used in baking to create a rich, moist texture in cakes and biscuits. But the use of almonds is not limited to purely culinary pursuits: almonds offer many health benefits as well, and one of their greatest qualities is their potential to help prevent greasy hair. Almonds are a concentrated source of vitamin B2, with half a cup of whole almonds providing more than 40 percent of the daily reference intake for this sebum regulating vitamin. Almonds also contain a fair amount of vitamin B6. In addition, almonds are a great source of essential fatty acids (EFAs), healthful fats that the body cannot synthesize and that must be obtained through diet.

#6: Paprika Powder
The slew of vitamins and minerals in paprika powder is so comprehensive that a few spoonfuls a day will provide you with more hair health promoting nutrients than many vitamin pills. Paprika is packed with beta-carotene and vitamin E. It is also one of most vitamin C rich spices. Further, it is one of the most concentrated sources of B vitamins, particularly of vitamin B2 and vitamin B6 (a mere tablespoon of paprika powder provides 14% of the recommended daily intake for vitamin B6). Evidence suggests that a sufficient intake of the vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) can help combat greasy hair by regulating sebum production. Furthermore, vitamin B6 helps control sugar cravings (diets high in sugary foods can make hair more oily) and promotes proper absorption of zinc in the intestines.

15 Things You Never Knew About Your Nails

The Huffington Post                 | By Laura Schocker

Aside from the occasional manicure, broken fingernail or stubbed toe, most of us tend to take our nails for granted, not giving them much beyond a passing thought.

But they might be more complicated than we think. For starters, nails are made up of more than just the part we paint over with polish. "The nail plate (hard part of the nail) grows out from the matrix (the root) in a shape something like an ocean wave," says Jessica Krant, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist, founder of Art of Dermatology and an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City. "The white portion of the nail at the base (most easily visible at the thumbs) is called the lunula (little moon). This is the end of the matrix showing."

Intrigued? Here are 15 more things you might not know about your nails:

Fingernails grow an average of 3.5 millimeters per month.
That's just over a tenth of an inch. And nails on your dominant hand tend to grow faster. Toenails, on the other, uh, hand, grow an average of 1.6 millimeters a month, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

White spots on your nails don't indicate a calcium deficiency.
"Calcium deficiency causing white spots on nails is the most common myth, followed by zinc deficiency. The truth is that white spots are common and harmless and don't indicate any specific vitamin deficiency at all," Krant says. "Most likely they are signs of previous trauma to the nail plate (the hard part of the nail) or the matrix (the source of the nail plate, which is located underneath the cuticle under the skin). Just like folding or denting a piece of clear plastic leaves a white spot, so does pressure or trauma to the nail."

Nails are made out of the same stuff as hair.
Both nails and hair are made up of keratin, just put together in a different way, Krant explains. And that means the same foods that are good for your hair are good for your nails. "A varied diet rich in vitamins, antioxidant fruits and veggies, protein, and minerals is key for healthy nails and hair," she says. "Keratin is a protein, and healthy oils and fats are also needed to keep the skin, hair, and nails moisturized and strong."

Men's nails grow faster than women's nails.
The possible exception, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, is during pregnancy.

Nails are what separate the primates from the mammals.
While most mammals have claws to help them with daily tasks, fingernails are something that distinguish primates (including humans) from the rest of the group, LiveScience reports:

Scientists suspect primates sort of lost their claws and fashioned broad fingertips topped with nails to aid in locomotion. While claws would have provided excellent grip as our mammalian ancestors clambered up large tree trunks, they would have been a nuisance for larger-bodied primates trying to grasp smaller branches while scrambling across tree canopies for fruits. Rather, primates developed broader fingertips made for grasping.

Nail biting is called onychophagia.
It's also the most common "nervous habit," WebMD reports, a category which includes other behaviors such as hair twisting or pulling, tooth grinding or picking at the skin. Roughly half of children between 10 and 18 bite their nails, according to WebMD, but most people stop on their own by age 30. While nail biting is largely harmless (albeit unsanitary), possible health risks include contributing to skin infections and aggravating nail bed conditions, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Last year, experts considered including nail-biting, along with other "pathological grooming" habits, as a type of obsessive compulsive disorder in the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

You actually should let your nails "breathe" between manicures.
You might want to reschedule that weekly mani appointment -- according to Krant, it's best to reduce the amount of time your nails are polished to keep them at their healthiest. "Believe it or not, that hard thing on the tip of your finger is living tissue, and oxygen does penetrate through the nail plate to the nail bed," she says. "When you smother the nail and the nail bed beneath it, the nail has a harder time fighting off infections like the wart virus or a nail fungus. Also, nail polish is quite drying to the nail, so keeping them polished all the time (and re-doing the manicure repeatedly, with the drying chemicals used to remove polish) can eventually dry them out and make them less flexible and strong."

Nails are a window to the entire body.
"There is a huge amount that a well-trained dermatologist can tell about your overall health just by examining nails. From nail bed discoloration (blueish means lung disease), to capillaries in the cuticles (autoimmune disease), to yellow, white, or banded nails, sometimes very serious or even life-threatening disease can be diagnosed just by examining the tips of your fingers," Krant says. "So if you see something wrong or unusual, like a dark brown patch on your cuticle that also has an accompanying brown streak up across the whole nail plate (melanoma), see a dermatologist for help."

Nails grow faster in the summer than in the winter.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, different times of year (as well as your age, genes and a handful of other factors) can affect nail growth speed.

About 10 percent of dermatological conditions are nail-related.
Roughly half of nail disorders are caused by fungal infections, according to the AAD (and they're more frequent in toenails). Other common conditions include white spots (see above), vertical lines, bacterial infections and ingrown toenails. Senior citizens tend to have more nail problems than younger people.

Stress can take a toll on your nails.
In addition to stress-related picking and biting, chronic stress can inhibit nail growth, HuffPost previously reported. It's important to manage stress and get plenty of sleep for optimal nail health (and for a whole bunch of other reasons), according to Krant. "Chronic stress and fatigue divert the body's energy and nutrients away from growing healthy nails and hair," she says.

There's a reason we can't stand nails on a chalkboard.
Just the thought of it is enough to make us cringe -- but why? According to 2011 research, part of the reason is because the noise hits a frequency that's naturally amplified by the shape of our ear canals, HuffPost reported at the time. The problem might also have a psychological component -- when study participants were told the source of the noise, they tended to rate it as more unpleasant compared to those who were told it was part of a musical composition.

Cuticles have a purpose.
And that's why many experts recommend against removing them for aesthetic purposes. "The cuticle is there to seal moisture and environmental germs out of the body, which is why it's very important not to pick at the cuticle or to let manicurists cut it off," Krant says. "It must be treated gently and left in place as much as possible."

The hardness of your nails is mostly genetic.
Not much can be done about nail shape or how quickly they grow in, Krant explains, but nails that constantly break or peel could signal being dried out. "Hand washing, doing dishes without thick rubber gloves, house cleaning, working with paper, getting frequent manicures, and using a lot of hand sanitizer are all culprits that contribute," she says. To protect your hands, use a thick hand and nail cream that you use regularly (not just once a day): "If you get into the habit of reapplying frequently, you keep your cuticles smooth and unclipped, and you gently file off rough nail edges instead of picking at them, your nails will start to peel and break less."

Your nails need blood to survive.
Ever wonder why your nail sometimes falls off after an injury? Here's the explanation: "Since the nail plate needs blood flow, oxygenation, and nutrients to grow normally, a crush injury (or kicking the edge of the door really, really hard by mistake) can disrupt the delicate microscopic connections that provide the nutrition, and that already growing nail may not be able to recover well enough to keep growing," Krant says. "It may fall off completely, and after time be replaced by a new perfectly healthy nail when the matrix and nail bed are able to reattach themselves to a freshly growing nail." If the damage happens at the root of the nail, under the cuticle, it can become permanently scarred, which might mean that you'll always grow a misshapen nail after that.
