Melindungi Kulit Bayi Dari SLS

5 Myths About Soy You Probably Still Believe

The Huffington Post  | By Sarah Klein

You certainly don't have to eat soy products, even as a vegetarian or vegan. But for many, options like veggie burgers, soy milk and miso soup make for convenient and tasty meat- or dairy-free dishes.

Despite how ubiquitous soy and its derivatives have become in our diets, confusion persists: Is soy healthy for men? And what's the deal with soy and breast cancer?

That's why we're setting the record straight on some of the biggest soy myths that just won't go away. Here are a few biggies to stop believing, stat.

MYTH: Soy isn't a good source of protein.
Fact: Vegetarians have had it with all the protein preaching. In fact, soybeans are what's known as a complete protein, meaning they contain all of the essential amino acids we have to get from food because they can't be made by the body. A cup of cooked soybeans contains about 22 grams of protein, almost as much as a serving of steak. Tofu, however, contains significantly less, with just nine grams in a three-ounce serving of extra-firm, and just six grams in three ounces of soft tofu.

MYTH: Soy-based imitation-meat products are nutritious because they're vegetarian.
Fact: Shaping anything that originated as a soybean into something that appears to be a chicken nugget, a sausage or a turkey breast usually requires quite a bit of processing, which can lead to lengthy ingredients lists. Many of these products are also high in sodium and fat, added to mock that missing meaty flavor. Like with just about every food, eating soy the closer to its natural state, the better.

MYTH: Soy causes breast cancer.
Fact: Yes, some breast cancer grows in the presence of estrogen, and yes, soy can act like estrogen. But there's no direct link saying soy can cause cancer. In some animal studies, pure isoflavones, the compound in soy bearing the chemical similarities to estrogen, have been shown to promote tumor growth, HuffPost Healthy Living's Meredith Melnick reported. However, humans both process isoflavones differently than rodents and isoflavone supplements vary greatly from dietary soy.

Among observational studies of humans who get high amounts of dietary soy, findings have shown either no link to breast cancer or lower rates of the disease. "Even though animal studies have shown mixed effects on breast cancer with soy supplements, studies in humans have not shown harm from eating soy foods," Marji McCullough, ScD, RD, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society wrote for the organization. "Moderate consumption of soy foods appears safe for both breast cancer survivors and the general population, and may even lower breast cancer risk."

MYTH: If you don't like tofu, soy protein supplements are a smart alternative.
Fact: Because of the suggested health implications of soy supplements in some of the animal studies mentioned above and others, most experts advise against supplementing with soy until more research is conducted. Short-term use is considered safe, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, but the impact of long-term use of soy isoflavones is not yet fully understood.

MYTH: Men shouldn't eat soy.
Fact: The concerns about the estrogen-like activities of soy have caused some to worry that soy products could decrease a man's testosterone, but clinical studies don't support this fear. There are at least two reports of men who have experienced feminizing changes in their bodies (one of whom had Type 1 diabetes) after consuming high doses of soy, but even at higher-than-average rates of consumption -- higher even than what's typical among Asian cultures -- science has found no evidence to caution men against eating soy. In fact, men may even benefit from some dietary soy, as it seems to decrease prostate cancer risk.

11 Everyday Toxins That Are Harming Your Thyroid

BY DR. WILLIAM COLE |JANUARY 21, 2014

Millions of people struggle with low thyroid symptoms, and millions more experience the symptoms of a low thyroid only to have their labs come back negative. They're told they are "normal," and are left with no answers. Symptoms like anxiety, irritability, depression, brain fog, weight gain and fatigue can debilitate lives for decades. One major underlying factor that isn't being addressed in the standard model of care is toxins.

Whether they're synthetic or natural in nature, toxins are a piece of the complex thyroid puzzle. Here are 11 offenders that may be affecting your thyroid function:

1. Perchlorates
Almost all of us have perchlorates in our bodies, according to the CDC. Perchlorate is a byproduct of the manufacturing of rocket and jet fuel, car air bags and fireworks. This toxin leaks into much of our drinking water and food supply. The CDC study found widespread perchlorate human exposure, and a connection between perchlorate levels and thyroid hormone levels.

Perchlorate prevents the production of thyroid hormone, which can lead to low thyroid symptoms. One study found babies born with elevated levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone may have been affected by small amounts of perchlorate in their mother's drinking water. These studies, and the work of the Environmental Working Group, show that not only is perchlorate exposure pervasive, but that even low levels of perchlorate exposure can have negative health effects on the thyroid.

2. PCBs
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are industrial chemicals that were banned in the 1970s but are still detected in our environment today. PCBs have been shown increase thyroid dysfunction, and, by increasing the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone, can make your body resistant to the thyroid hormone, similar to the insulin resistance seen in type II diabetes. They also can affect the liver enzymes that regulate the conversion of your thyroid hormone so it can be available to use in your body.

3. Dioxins
Both PCBs and dioxins are known to have disruptive effects on the endocrine system, and a dioxin is the primary toxic component of Agent Orange. I have seen many patients who served in Vietnam, and they have linked their current thyroid problems to Agent Orange.

4. Soy
Phytoestrogens in soy proteins have been found to inhibit thyroid peroxidase. Soy is able to disrupt normal thyroid function by inhibiting the body’s ability to use iodine, blocking the process by which iodine becomes the thyroid hormones, inhibiting the secretion of thyroid hormone, and disrupting the peripheral conversion of T4 to T3. Researchers have also found that infants fed soy formula had a prolonged increase in their thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, compared to infants fed non-soy formulas. Soy is also commonly a genetically modified food (GMO), which adds another variable to consider.

5. Pesticides
One study found that women married to men who used pesticides in their daily work were at a much higher risk of developing thyroid problems than other women. Another study warns that about 60 percent of pesticides used today may affect the thyroid gland’s production of hormones. Many antifungals and weed killers used on produce have been shown to decrease thyroid function and increase weight-loss resistance.

6. Flame retardants
Flame retardants, or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been found in several studies to disturb thyroid function. Flame-retardant chemicals are found in television and computer screens, as well as in the foam used for furniture and carpeting padding. PBDEs are also found in many Americans, and are linked to behavioral and developmental problems.

7. Plastics
Beyond an environmental concern, plastics can also be hazardous to your body's environment. Antimony, a chemical that leaches from plastic bottles, is one concern. Researchers at the University of Copenhagen found antimony levels in fruit drinks and juices in plastic bottles at levels 2.5 times higher than what’s considered safe in tap water! Phthalates in some plastics have been shown to decrease thyroid function. Bisphenol A (BPA) — also used in plastics, food can coatings, and dental sealants — decreases thyroid receptor site sensitivity, causing thyroid resistance, similar to PCBs.

8. PFOA
One study found that perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical used to make Teflon, food wrappers, and other products, can affect thyroid function even at moderate levels of exposure. A study in Environmental Health Perspectives found that higher concentrations of PFOA are associated with the thyroid conditions that are seen today.

9. Halogens
Fluoride and chloride exposure can lead to a decrease of iodine transport and block the conversion of the T4 to T3, which is the active form of your thyroid hormone. Fluoride was found to suppress thyroid function, and the dose needed to reduce thyroid function was low, 2 to 5 mg per day. You can absorb these halogens through your food, water, medications and the environment. Because they're similar to iodine, they can occupy your iodine receptors, making the body's iodine levels unusable.

10. Heavy Metals
Mercury, lead and aluminum can all trigger antibodies, which in turn lead to autoimmune thyroid conditions such as the Grave’s and Hashimoto’s disease. This is not acute poisoning that I am referring to, which would show up on a conventional blood test. I'm referring to a chronic heavy metal toxicity which can only be accurately shown with a urine test using a chelating agent. The chelator will pull the metals from your cells where it has leached, so it can actually be measured on the test.

11. Antibacterial Products
Triclosan is an antibacterial chemical added to soaps, lotions and toothpastes. Although some research has shown small amounts to be safe, there's evidence that triclosan is an endocrine disruptor and impacts thyroid function. One recent study found that triclosan had an effect on thyroid hormones, and another showed that triclosan interacted with androgen and estrogen hormone receptors.

Conclusion:
Remember, every person is uniquely complex. Everyone has his own genetic tolerance for toxins like these. Think of your genetic tolerance as an empty bucket, and these toxins are filling up the bucket. Some people's buckets are smaller than those of others, and therefore fill up faster. Some people can be exposed to all of these toxins and show no noticeable effects from them. This is not a simple "one size fits all" solution.

I don't want you to feel defeated when reading this article. It's easy to say, "I'm doomed," but be encouraged, because knowledge is power. You can make informed decisions to decrease the level of stress your thyroid is up against. You can also investigate these underlying issues and address them head on. And lastly, remember, your body is amazingly resilient. It wants to heal. I coach people all around the world who suffer from seemingly insurmountable health problems, and I've seen them completely restore their health when we address these underlying components.

Surprises found in hunt for environmental links to breast cancer

Tuesday, November 12, 2013
By Kerry Sheridan, AFP

WASHINGTON -- A decade-long research effort to uncover the environmental causes of breast cancer by studying both lab animals and a group of healthy U.S. girls has turned up some surprises, scientists say.
At the center of the investigation are 1,200 school girls who do not have breast cancer, but who have already given scientists important new clues about the possible origins of the disease.

Some risk factors are well understood, including early puberty, later age of childbearing, late onset of menopause, estrogen replacement therapy, drinking alcohol and exposure to radiation.

Advances have also been made in identifying risky gene mutations, but these cases make up a small minority. “Most of breast cancer, particularly in younger women, does not come from family histories,” said Leslie Reinlib, a program director at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. “We have still got 80 percent that has got to be environmental,” said Reinlib, who is part of the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program (BCERP) program that has received some US$70 million in funds from the U.S. government since 2003.

Some of its researchers track what is happening in the human population, while others study how carcinogens, pollutants and diet affect the development of the mammary glands and breast tumors in lab mice. The program's primary focus is on puberty because its early onset “is probably one of the best predictors of breast cancer in women,” Reinlib said.

Puberty is a time of rapid growth of the breast tissue. Research on survivors of the Hiroshima atomic bombings in Japan has shown that those exposed in puberty had a higher likelihood of developing breast cancer in adulthood. The 1,200 U.S. girls enrolled in the study at sites in New York City, northern California and the greater Cincinnati, Ohio, area beginning in 2004, when they were between the ages of six and eight.

The aim was to measure the girls' chemical exposures through blood and urine tests, and to learn how environmental exposures affected the onset of puberty and perhaps breast cancer risk later in life. Researchers quickly discovered that their effort to reach girls before puberty had not been entirely successful.

“By age eight, 40 percent were already in puberty,” said Reinlib. “That was a surprising bit of information.” Further research has shown that the girls appear to be entering puberty six to eight months earlier than their peers did in the 1990s.

Obesity an Influencing Factor

A study published last week in the journal Pediatrics on this cohort of girls found that obesity was acting as a primary driver of earlier breast development. Other studies on the girls have focused on chemicals that are known as endocrine disruptors because they are believed to cause either earlier or later breast development.

Initial results showed “for the first time that phthalates, BPA, pesticides are in all the girls they looked at,” said Reinlib. Researchers were taken aback by the pervasiveness of the exposures, but also by the data which appeared to show some plastic chemicals might not be as influential on breast development as some have feared.

“They didn't find much of an association between puberty and phthalates, which are these chemicals that leach out of plastic bottles and Tupperware,” Reinlib said. Another major finding regarded blood chemicals from two nearby groups in Ohio and Kentucky, both drinking water that was apparently contaminated by industrial waste.

Girls in northern Kentucky had blood levels of an industrial chemical — perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA or C-8) found in Teflon non-stick coating for pans — three times as high as those who drank water from the Ohio River near Cincinnati, where water was filtered with state-of-the-art technology.

“Northern Kentucky did not have granular activated carbon filtration” in their water supply said researcher Susan Pinney, a professor at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. “In 2012 they put it in after they learned of our preliminary results.” Families were also notified of their daughters' blood levels, she said.

The chemicals can linger in the body for years. Researchers were dismayed to learn that the longer the girls spent breastfeeding as infants — typically touted for its health benefits — the higher their PFOA levels compared to girls who were fed formula.

What cannot be studied in the girls is tried on lab mice, who in one experiment are being fed high-fat diets and exposed to a potent carcinogen to see how the two interact. Mammary tumors develop much faster in the high-fat diet group, said scientist Richard Schwartz of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Michigan State University.

Fat mice have more blood supply in the mammary glands, higher inflammation levels and display changes in the immune system. Follow-up studies suggest that cancer risk stays high even if mice are fed high-fat diets in puberty and switched to low-fat diets in adulthood, he told AFP.

“The damage is already done,” he said. “Does this mean that humans are at risk the same way? We don't know that with certainty.” But the findings do reinforce the advice that people often hear regarding how to maintain good health — avoid fatty foods, maintain a normal weight and reduce chemical exposures wherever possible, experts say.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women globally and took 508,000 lives in 2011, according to the World Health Organization.

Minnesota Legislature Votes to Ban Formaldehyde in Children’s Soaps, Lotions

Minnesota’s legislature took a giant step toward protecting children by banning formaldehyde, a cancer-causing chemical, from children’s personal care products like lotions, shampoos, and bubble baths. The ban against the use of formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives would apply to products intended for children under eight. The legislation now moves to the desk of Governor Mark Dayton.

“Minnesota’s proposed ban on formaldehyde in children’s products is fantastic news for parents in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but families in the other 49 states also deserve safe products free of cancer-causing chemicals like formaldehyde,” said Cindy Luppi with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and Clean Water Action. “We need Congress to pass the Safe Cosmetics Act that would protect children across America from personal care products made with toxic chemicals linked to serious health disorders and diseases.”

Consumer demand for safer products, especially for children, is changing the marketplace.

In 2011, Johnson & Johnson committed to reformulating its baby products to remove formaldehyde. Last year, the company set an industry standard by announcing it would remove known carcinogens and other toxic chemicals from both its baby and adult products by 2015.

“There’s no reason for formaldehyde-releasing chemicals to be in products that children inhale and absorb through their skin. Safer alternatives are available and being used by some manufacturers. This bill takes an important step in protecting young children who could suffer health effects from exposure to toxic formaldehyde,” said Kathleen Schuler, Co-Director of Healthy Legacy, the Minnesota environmental health coalition supporting the legislation.

Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are used in many personal care products, particularly shampoos and lotions, and have been linked to both skin sensitivity and cancer. The European Union restricts the use of formaldehyde in personal care products, and requires that products with formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing ingredients carry the label “contains formaldehyde.”

Congress has yet to act to remove dangerous chemicals from personal care products. Legislation introduced earlier this year, the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2013, will phase out chemicals linked to cancer and reproductive harm; implement a strong safety standard designed to protect children, pregnant women and workers; require full disclosure of ingredients; and give FDA the authority to recall dangerous products.

Bahan-bahan di Sabun Mandi yang Memicu Alergi

Vera Farah Bararah - detikHealth

5 toxic chemicals you should banish from your home

By Leah Zerbe, updated 8/28/2011 1:15:49 PM ET

EMMAUS, PA — Cleaning house doesn’t mean nasty chemicals have to pollute your home. Your next home cleaning campaign or daunting do-it-yourself projects can be done without poisoning the air or tainting your local water supply. Most of our safer alternatives will even save you money, too.
Here are five chemical culprits to kick out of your house—and the nontoxic options that should move in instead.

1. Coal-tar driveway sealant: If you plan to seal your blacktop driveway this spring, avoid coal-tar based sealants. They contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, which studies suggest can be carcinogenic, toxic, and mutagenic. When rainwater and other precipitation hit your driveway, the toxic chemicals run off into your yard and into your local drinking water supply. In fact, this situation has been compared to dumping quarts of motor oil right down a storm drain.

Better alternative: Gravel and other porous materials are best for driveways, because they allow rainwater to sink into the ground, where it’s filtered and won’t inundate water treatment plants. But if you do seal blacktop, pick asphalt sealant and stay away from any product that has coal tar in its name (or products simply called “driveway sealant”). Lowe’s and Home Depot have already banned the bad stuff, but smaller hardware stores may still carry it.

2. Synthetic pesticides: Chemical weed and bug killers both fit under this category and should be avoided both inside and outside of your house. (And dont' fall for the ones that pretend to be "natural.") Researchers link herbicides to various forms of cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; insecticides have been connected to brain damage in kids.
“This is a good time of the year to resolve not to use pesticides on lawns and gardens,” says Phil Landrigan, MD, an internationally recognized leader in public health, director of Mount Sinai's Children's Environmental Health Center, and Rodale.com advisor. “A few dandelions or buttercups or other little flowers in the middle of the lawn are not unsightly.”

Better alternative: Combating an indoor bug problem is as simple as cleaning up crumbs, sealing food in containers, and using wood shims and a caulking gun to fill pest entry points. If you’re spending big bucks on chemicals for a turflike lawn, reconsider. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers kill the health of the soil and create a lawn that allows for little rainwater absorption, which contributes to flooding. Try replacing some sod with plants native to your area; they don’t require as much water and maintenance.
If you’re dead-set on the idea of a perfect grassy lawn, get out there and weed by hand or with organic methods. The extra exercise will help you burn off your winter love handles. Check OrganicGardening.com for advice on chemical-free lawn care, and see our story on chemcial-free fixes for common lawn problems.

3. Antibacterial soap: The antimicrobial chemical triclosan in antibacterial soaps is believed to disrupt thyroid function and hormone levels in people; when it mixes into wastewater, it can cause sex changes in aquatic life. And health experts believe that overuse of this and other antibacterial chemicals is promoting the growth of bacteria that are resistant to antibacterial treatment.

Better alternative: Good old-fashioned soap and warm water will kill just as many germs, studies have shown. If you must use a hand sanitizer, pick one that’s alcohol-based and doesn’t list triclosan or other chemicals on its label.

4. Synthetic fragrances: Fragrance may be the most common type of chemical in your house. Used in laundry detergents, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, cleaning supplies and disinfectants, air fresheners, deodorizers, shampoos, hair sprays, gels, lotions, sunscreens, soaps, perfumes, powders, and scented candles, fragrances are a class of chemicals that may take you extra time and effort to avoid. But it’s worth it. The term “fragrance” or “parfum” on personal care product labels can be a cover for hundreds of harmful chemicals known to be carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, and reproductive toxicants, even at low levels.

Better alternative: Go the unscented route whenever possible, especially with soaps and detergents. Avoid any kind of air freshener or deodorizer, including sprays, gels, solid disks, and oils, suggests Anne Steinemann, PhD, University of Washington researcher who focuses on water quality and fragrances in consumer products. She’s also a Rodale.com advisor. “These products do not clean or disinfect the air, but they do add hazardous chemicals to the air we breath,” she says. “Instead of chemical air fresheners, freshen the air with better ventilation and by setting out some baking soda,” she suggests. You also can place a bowl of white vinegar in a room to dispel a funky smell.

5. Harsh cleaning products: Isn’t it ironic that we actually contaminate our air when we use harsh chemicals—some of which are carcinogens—to “clean” our homes? Ammonia can trigger asthmatic attacks, and harsh oven cleaners and drain openers can cause terrible damage to children who come into contact with them. “Every year we have these dreadful third-degree burns of the throat and esophagus because kids got into cleaners under the sink,” Landrigan says.

Better alternative: Take any cleaner whose ingredient list reads like a chemistry textbook to a hazardous waste disposal center in your municipality and replace the cleaners with ecofriendly ones that have simple, natural ingredients.

Better yet, save tons of money and pull out Grandma’s homemade cleaning concoctions, including:

• A general cleaning solution of one part white vinegar and nine parts water will kill 90 percent of bacteria and many spores, explains germ expert Donna Duberg, assistant professor of clinical laboratory science at Saint Louis University. Spray it on and let it dry to a nice shine on its own. The best surprise about distilled white vinegar? “Store brands work just as well as brand names,” says Duberg. “You can buy a gallon for $1.89 and make more than 10 gallons of cleaning solution. The only other thing you need is a spray bottle.” When you’re finished using a vinegar cleaning solution, dump it down your garbage disposal or toilet for bonus odor control.

• For a window glass cleaner, mix one part white vinegar with one part water and spray. Duberg says you even can use newspapers instead of paper towels to wipe the glass clean and save money.

• When cleaning in the kitchen after prepping meat, use hot, soapy water first (we like simple, unscented castile soaps) and then follow with the vinegar-water solution.
