Top 10 natural ways seniors can fight unwanted wrinkles

Wrinkles and laugh lines and crow’s feet, oh my!

Have you seen the YouTube video, Anita Renfroe’s Wrinkled Ladies? The song is a parody of Beyonce’s Single Ladies (Put a ring on it). (You may remember Refroe's The Mom Song, sung to the tune of William Tell). When I heard the new parody, I laughed out loud. And then, of course, it got me to thinking about my own wrinkles.

As aging boomers, it’s only natural to sport a few wrinkles. There’s no denying it’s an age thing. While we stand proud and tall, wearing these badges of courage and honor, from the ones that boast a life well-lived to the tattle tale scars of child-rearing survival to the newer laugh lines, rewards of sharing precious moments with grandkids… Still. They’re wrinkles.

Make new laugh lines and keep the old, one is silver and the other gold…

We may not be able to fight City Hall, but we can fight wrinkles and laugh lines. Don’t get me wrong -- I wouldn’t trade my life experiences for a complexion as smooth as a baby’s bottom, because my grandchildren make my life rich and full and beautiful. They make me laugh, which is, after all, the best medicine.

That being said, who wouldn’t love to get rid of just a few wrinkles for a more youthful look? I’m not talking about facelifts or Botox or even slathering on tons of cream. I'm talking about healing from the inside out. There are natural, healthy ways to reduce that pruney-faced, withered, weathered look.

Top 10 natural ways to fight wrinkles

1. Water. Just as plants need water to keep their leaves supple, drinking water helps moisturize your skin, resulting in less wilting and dryness.

2. Vitamin C in your diet can decrease wrinkles for a more youthful look. Stock up on oranges. Studies show that the flavonones in oranges help stop skin-cell death.

3. Papaya. Collagen, the protein fibers that give skin its resiliency, and a powerful antioxidant that protects the collagen, are both found in the skin-friendly nutrient, Vitamin C. Beyond vitamin supplements and orange juice, there’s another fruit loaded with Vitamin C. Papaya. Here are some great papaya recipes from AllRecipes.com, including one for a smoothie even your grandchildren will love.

4. Sun protection. UV rays are not your friend. Whenever you’re outside, wear sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and moisturizer to protect your skin from exposure to UV radiation.

5. Say no to fats and refined carbs. Scientists found both were linked to aging skin. Eat more lean protein: fish, eggs, poultry, low-fat dairy foods, and even walnuts.

6. Walnuts. The essential fatty acid, linoleic acid, found in walnuts makes for moister, healthier skin.

7. Whole grains. They’re loaded with magnesium and B vitamins and they help with the regeneration of skin cells.

8. Fruits and veggies. Experts suspect that vitamins A, C, and E and the minerals zinc and selenium may keep wrinkles away by reducing the amount of potentially damaging free radicals produced by skin cells. And carotenoid-rich fruit and veggies such as cantaloupe, apricots, carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach may also boost your skin's health.

9. Antioxidants. Antioxidants like green tea, vitamins C & E, & coenzyme Q10 fight free radicals which cause skin damage. Go for foods rich in antioxidants: berries, pomegranate, grape, orange, plum, pineapple, kiwi fruit, grapefruit, Kale, chili pepper, red cabbage, peppers, parsley, artichoke, brussels sprouts, spinach, lemon, ginger, red beets, apricots, prunes, dates, broad beans, pinto beans, soybeans, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, ground nut, sunflower seeds, barley, millet, oats, corn.cloves, cinnamon, oregano.

10. Stress-Management. You know the drill: deep breathing and meditation, exercise, getting ample sleep. Another important stress reduction element  is to take time to smell the roses, sip the coffee, or take just 10 to 15 minutes a day to sit by yourself away from all the hustle and bustle.

And don't forget CUDDLING. Cuddling releases endomorphines that make happiness happen -- and that's what grandchildren are for.
