Sweet Almond Oil Benefits

By Laura Leiva, eHow Contributor

Almonds are a healthy source of vitamins and minerals, according to Dr. Ray Sahelian. Sweet almond oil, derived from the nut, is used in a variety of beauty and health remedies to treat dry skin and hair and for internal health. Sweet almond oil is beneficial for the body, as it is a quality source of nutrients and antioxidants.

Hair
No matter what condition your hair is in, sweet almond oil provides nourishment to create thick, healthy locks. The oil heals split-ends, improves circulation in the scalp to produce stronger hair, and adds luster and shine to dull hair. To use sweet almond oil for the hair, add three or four drops of the oil into the hands, rub together, and massage the scalp gently. Once you have massaged the scalp and run the hands through the hair, allow it to sit for approximately 20 minutes before washing with a gentle shampoo. Use the oil two times a week to maintain healthy, shiny hair.

Skin
Many oils leave a greasy feeling on the skin after application. Sweet almond oil is moisturizing and nourishing to the skin without leaving a residue behind. Since almond oil features vitamin E, it also helps to reduce inflammation and irritation of the skin. Sweet almond oil is safe to use on any skin type, moisturizing skin without clogging pores. Additional skin benefits from using sweet almond oil include reducing discoloration on the skin, adding moisture to chapped or chafed skin and lips, improves the overall complexion and prevents dry or flaking skin. Apply a few drops of the oil to the skin each day to improve overall appearance.

Internal Health
Eating whole almonds as part of a balanced diet improves overall health and weight, since the nuts contain protein, minerals and fat for healthy living. Aside from the whole nuts, sweet almond oil is beneficial for internal health for both the heart and digestive system. The fat and protein content of the oil improves brain function and circulatory systems, and according to the United States Food and Drug Administration, almonds and their oil may be used as part of a low-saturated fat diet to reduce occurrence of heart disease or other heart-related ailments. According to the National Institutes of Health, adults over 18 may use 30 milliliters each day of sweet almond oil to encourage healthy digestion and reduce constipation.
