Dermatologist, Dr. Nicholas Perricone, MD,
author of the Perricone Principal and many other great books on skincare recommends eating foods that have an
anti-inflammatory property. His favorites are; Fish, Watercress, Olives ,Olive
Oils, Turmeric (a spice), Dark Chocolate, Blueberries, Cantaloupe, Coconut, and
Avocados. Some of these foods are high in fat and should be used as a garnish
not as a meal, especially if you are dieting but they add necessary good fats
back into your body.
Omega 3’s help fight
inflammation in the body. You get these from salmon, herring, mackerel,
sardines, anchovies, trout, flaxseeds, walnuts and vegetable oil. Try a salmon
BLT made with turkey bacon and whole wheat bread for lunch. Eat this two or
three times a week to give yourself the added Omega 3’s from the fish. Add
flaxseed to your morning cereal as well.
Eating antioxidant
rich foods like blueberries, raspberries, cantaloupe,
cherries, and watermelon help get phytochemicals into your body. Antioxidant
rich vegetables include spinach, kale, broccoli, peppers, squash, and pumpkin.
Vitamin C, Vitamin A from these fruits and vegetables have been shown to
prevent sun damage and improve your skins quality.
Dark Chocolate which is at least
75%-90% cocoa content has more antioxidants than blueberries, green tea and red
wine (try The Apothic Red). Apothic is a winemakers blend from California and
available at most groceries. Why not enjoy your dark chocolate with a small
glass of dark red wine for a double dose of antioxidants.
Spice up your food with cinnamon and
turmeric. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and in India where it is
used in almost every dish there are very low occurrences of Alzheimer’s
disease. Tumeric contains the super antioxidant curcumin. Cinnamon is also
thought to be a blood thinner and very helpful in fighting arterosclerosis.
The skin is one of the largest organs in your body and your
grandmother was right, “You are what you eat.” If we can get back to basics and
consume good fruits and vegetables along with fresh fish and some of the
necessary fats mentioned above we truly can have perfect glowing skin.
